Season summary [edit]
The Machine's sentience is fully revealed as it increasingly communicates with and proactively assists and directs the actions of the team. After beingness demoted due to HR'southward machinations, Carter delves deeper into her investigation of the organization and somewhen uncovers and arrests its leader, thus bringing down the entire organization, but she is so killed past its rogue second-in-command. In his grief over her decease, Reese briefly leaves the team. The team also battles Vigilance, a fierce anti-government hacktivist organisation devoted to securing people's privacy.
During the second half of the third season, the existence of code to create another bogus intelligence – called Samaritan – is revealed, which has fallen into Decima's hands. Samaritan differs from the Auto in being open to external direction and willing to remove those seen as disruptive to law and lodge pre-emptively, and is a more advanced pattern, but every bit seen past the Motorcar, should never take existed every bit it lacks a moral lawmaking – an aspect that Samaritan sees as a flaw. In the flavor three finale, information technology is revealed that Greer, who sees Samaritan as a means to prepare humanity's problems, had covertly built Vigilance as a domestic terrorist threat, and created a terrorist upshot of mass destruction in their proper name, to manipulate the government into ordering Samaritan's activation and providing direct access to the NSA feeds required for full operation. Unable to forbid Samaritan's activation, the Machine creates new identities for the Team while Root and Shaw change Samaritan to always care for the new identities as unsuspicious.
Cast and characters [edit]
Episodes [edit]
Production [edit]
Development [edit]
The serial was renewed for a third season in March 2013.[one] Jonathan Nolan stated that he viewed the flavour as two halves: the first half focusing on Carter's journeying and the second one-half focusing more than on the Machine storyline.[29] Nolan commented on the 22-episode season order, "It'south very hard. The number of episodes is probably calibrated non to the length of the season just to the verbal point a showrunner volition have a nervous breakdown."[30]
Writing [edit]
Greg Plageman said that the Machine'south location is not the central theme of the flavor, but what its intentions are, "What is it upwardly to? What sort of organism is it becoming? And is information technology expanding beyond the parameters of what even Finch designed?"[31]
Amy Acker teased her role in the flavor, "The Machine and Root have a very special connectedness — at least in her mind. So information technology'south either perpetuating her fantasies past calling her or something else." She likewise addressed more scenes with Shaw, saying, "She's so great, I would honey to torture her again any day."[32] Plageman added that the season would explore mostly Carter and Shaw's pasts.[33] On Shaw's part, Plageman deemed her function of the "Groucho Marx Schoolhouse", explaining that she wouldn't piece of work for anyone post-obit her authorities's expose but she would help the squad "when she feels like it."[33] Sarah Shahi commented on her character'southward by on "Razgovor", "as we were shooting it, I felt like it was a complete and total disaster and I had no idea how it was going to turn out. Simply then later on watching it I was very pleased with it."[34]
Many analysts noticed similarities betwixt the season'due south ambulation and Edward Snowden, whose actions drew parallelisms to the series' premise, particularly to an episode in the commencement season, "No Good Act".[35] Nolan commented, "Occasionally, nosotros've been defendant of writing a prove that's sort of an apologia for the surveillance state. I totally refuse that. If there'southward a pessimism to the show, information technology's in the premise non merely that this is inevitable but that it's already happened. The science-fiction part of the show is that the Automobile is accurate, but the invasion of civil liberties is non imaginary. If the legacy of the Second World War was the diminutive age, and then what might emerge from the state of war on terror would be artificial intelligence."[35] Plageman said, "What's interesting well-nigh the revelations coming from Snowden is that at that place are other characters, other figures — some who work for the FBI or the NSA — who indicated years agone that this was something that was going on. Certainly Shane Harris outlined all this in his book The Watchers, going dorsum equally far as Admiral Poindexter, and so what we'd similar to do this year is inform people how long this has actually been going on, through drama and through fiction, but in a mode that is actually quite real."[33] Thespian Kevin Chapman said, "Look at the NSA — they're making us look like a reality show! We've been talking virtually that for 3 seasons, and information technology's at present just coming to lite."[36]
Casting [edit]
A few days subsequently the second season ended, information technology was appear that Sarah Shahi, who played Sameen Shaw, would exist upgraded to serial regular starting with this flavor.[37] In July 2013, information technology was reported that Amy Acker was also upgraded to serial regular for the season.[38] Nolan commented on the decision to upgrade both stars, "when you add together a few new characters, that actually winds upwardly adding 5 or six new relationships. It gives us that much more of a challenge, which is great fun."[39]
The season brough dorsum many actors from the series, including Paige Turco every bit Zoe Morgan, who reprised her role on "Lady Killer".[xl] [41]
"The Crossing" features the death of Joss Carter, played by Taraji P. Henson. Amid rumors of a master graphic symbol death, recurring bandage member Carrie Preston teased the death, "Information technology's going to be sad for everybody — not just the fans but as well the cast. Merely I retrieve the way [the show] is treatment it is quite remarkable."[42] [43] Nolan told Henson most her death at the kickoff of 2013, indicating, "It was a bloodshot conversation, because we love working with her and vice versa. It's been a swell creative collaboration. As sad as we were to meet her go, I think we were all excited [Taraji, us and the writers] to get into a juicy slice of material, to tell a tragedy." He went on to explicate the decision, "For this story [HR, police abuse] it was a natural boiling point that would put her first and foremost into focus. And frankly, every bit writers, we've long said that Carter was the middle of the show, and your perverse impulse as a writer is to practise as much impairment to the audience as possible. There's zip more than dastardly than — if Carter's the centre of the evidence — breaking that eye for the audience in the middle of the season."[44] Executive producer Greg Plageman as well commented on the determination, "What felt natural to us was with Hr existence with us from the pilot, their diabolical no-goodness, it felt like they had information technology in for Carter... information technology got to a betoken where yous recall if this person is going to hold her head up and walk into a precinct ever once more she'due south going to take to have them on and in the conversations she had with her son, information technology was kind of understood what she had to exercise and it felt like the fourth dimension was right."[45] The osculation scene between Reese and Carter was unscripted, with Nolan commenting, "It was just a swapping scars moment. And then when the actors went there, it was all of their own volition, because in that moment they both felt information technology. And when yous removed that element, the scene didn't experience quite the same."[46]
Among the many guest stars in the season include Warren Kole as Ian Murphy, "a POI whom Detective Carter, Amanuensis Shaw and Zoe Morgan each try to catch the eye of — past any dressed-to-kill ways necessary."[47] For the commencement episode, Rey Valentin was cast as Jack Salazar, "a sailor on shore leave — during Fleet Calendar week in New York Urban center."[33] The quaternary episode guest starred Kathleen Rose Perkins as Vanessa Watkins, "a former ADA who is captured past the constabulary for murdering her defense chaser ex-husband."[33] In Nov 2013, Saul Rubinek joined for a two-episode guest performance as Arthur Claypool, a graphic symbol only described as "slowly losing his mind."[48]
In July 2013, Leslie Odom Jr. joined the series in a recurring role as Peter Collier, "an educated, even-tempered tech executive. Highly belittling, he plays his cards shut to the belong."[49] In November 2013, Camryn Manheim joined the series as Diane, Arthur Claypool's married woman.[48] She debuted on "Lethe", where her character was revealed to be Control.[50] The graphic symbol was teased on "God Mode", where she was played unseen past an uncredited actress.[51]

And, of course, every journey comes to an end."[58]
